In the post we look at what are the best make-up items to use to ensure that your make-up stays on when your mask comes off!

The first thing in the war on mask-proofing your make-up is to look at a mask that does not sit too tightly around the mouth. Another option is to get a mask cage or bracket which keeps the mask away from your face and makes it easier to breathe too. You just slip it under your mask, and some will clip in place depending on the mask. At around £6 for a multiple pack, it’s worth a try!

Foundation & finishing spray

Next comes foundation, which along with lipstick are the main issues. You have a couple of options. The first is to use your normal liquid foundation and then use a setting spray. My favourite one at the moment is the
DIOR BACKSTAGE Airflash Spray This can be used as both a primer and setting spray. It gives a velvety texture to your make-up finish and it’s also great in the summer when it’s hot to stop make-up from melting. A cheaper choice is the Urban Decay All Nighter but this does not really give a finish in the same way as the Dior. But it does make your make-up less liable to come off and is available in a handbag/travel size too.

The second option is a powder foundation which is less likely to rub off than a liquid foundation. My current go-to is Bobbie Brown’s Skin Weightless Powder Foundation with a silky, oil-free powder formula which can give quite a medium to full coverage if you build it up. It’s best for normal to oily skin.

If you want more of a glow, the IT Cosmetics Celebration Powder gives a lovely fresh look while also smoothing wrinkles with an airbrushed finish. Finally, for a super light finish, the Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish powder compact looks great in your bag and can be used over liquid foundation too as a finishing powder. It gives a soft-focus effect with cashmere-like finish but is very lightweight. Like the IT one, it helps to blur fine lines and imperfections.

Lips

With a mask, unless you use a mask that stands away from your lips or a cage, you will need to ditch the gloss! However, there are plenty of other options, some more succsessful than others.

If you usually wear gloss then the YSL Vernis À Lèvres Vinyl Cream Lip Gloss. It combines the shine of a gloss with the long-lasting colour of a lip-stain, and stays put for up to 10 hours. Simply sweep the diamond-shaped applicator over your lips to enhance the cupid’s bow for a sharp, professional contour that lasts. They are longer lasting than a usual gloss, but not as good as some of the options below. I usually apply one coat, wait, blot and then reapply.

The best ways to go for a lasting lip are either a liquid lipstick or a stain. Huda Beauty Liquid Matte is one of the best ones as it is less drying than many others and not too matte. They also do a semi-matte version which is similar to the YSL one.

My personal favourite is Kevyn Aucoin (my favourite brand of makeup – he was a very famous make-up artist) The Molten Lip Color This not only comes in matt colours but has a range of iridescent shad perfect for a night out.

If you would rather have something lighter on your lips or more natural, a stain is the way to go. The original lip stain that most people know was the Benetint. The stain comes in a Rose colour and can be used on lips as well as cheeks.

The Clarins version, the Water Lip Stain is very light and keeps your lips hydrated as well as tinted with a light wash of colour. There are five shades available. Dior Lip Tattoo is better if you are looking for a deeper colour effect.

  1. I have found the LE ROUGE DUO ULTRA TENUE by Chanel to be the best option for lips under masks. Apply colour , wait till tacky then apply gloss and it doesn’t budge at all once dry. Generally I am a die hard Dior fan but even their lip tints are beaten by this in terms of “stick” !

  2. I was very excited when I first read about lip stains and bought two from Benefit, one with a brush and one with a sponge applicator. Both are useless and don’t last any longer than a normal lipstick. Even on cheeks they wear off after a few hours.
